AmeriCorps Information
In 1993, President Clinton created the Corporation for National and Community Service. The Corporation for National and Community Service provides opportunities for Americans of all ages and backgrounds to serve their communities and country through three programs: Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, and Learn and Serve America. Members and volunteers serve with national and community nonprofit organizations, faith-based groups, schools, and local agencies to help meet community needs in education, the environment, public safety, homeland security, and other critical areas. The Corporation is part of USA Freedom Corps, a White House initiative to foster a culture of citizenship, service, and responsibility, and help all Americans answer the President's Call to Service.
AmeriCorps has four types of programs: AmeriCorps, AmeriCorps VISTA, AmeriCorps Promise Fellows, and AmeriCorps NCCC. In AmeriCorps, individuals directly serve the community in non-profit community agencies for a term of service. Following the successful completion of a term of service, members are eligible to receive an Education Award from the National Service Trust. This Education Award can be used to pay for tuition or other school related expenses, or for student loan repayment.
National Council of La Raza (NCLR) is the largest Hispanic serving organization in the US. NCLR is an AmeriCorps National Direct grantee and is directly funded from the Corporation. NCLR funds 10 affiliate agencies across the US to hold AmeriCorps programs. Luz is funded for AmeriCorps by NCLR.
At Luz, AmeriCorps members serve in the community by providing tutoring services to middle and high school students, work on substance abuse prevention programs, work with neighborhood groups, and assist in youth mentoring programs.
